Open Marriage

Definition

A marital relationship in which the parties agree that extramarital sexual activity, (sex outside of the partnership) is permitted and not considered to be cheating or infidelity.

An Open Marriage can be referenced using many different terms, such as polyamory and swinging. The main differences between the various types of open marriages are the number of sexual partners, external of the marriage, and the level of input each person within the marriage has on their spouse’s activities.

Example

After discussing with his wife Susan, Peter explained to Laura that he was in an Open Marriage and they began engaging in a sexual relationship.
