A term which describes a semi-committed relationship wherein the parties want to be together but agree that it’s acceptable to see other people.
Open relationships will often occur as a result of distance and/or a significant change to the context of the relationship. The most common forms of open relationships are those which have a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy. Meaning both parties are not obliged to disclose any information about their hook-ups external of the relationship.
Example
Rodney: “Are we allowed to be making out? Aren’t you still with Wesley?” Elisha: “We’re in an open relationship now that Wesley has gone off to college, it’s a don’t ask don’t tell kind of thing.”
